This is just a quick edit of some old Battle Mode footage...
I am in the process of clearing off some space on my hard drive (old computer) and wanted to take some time to reupload this in a single, continuous video. I think that it was uploaded in a "Round" format complete with commentary back in the day, but for some of you, this will be new stuff...This goes back several capture cards so it is not quite "full screen" by today's standards, but that just adds to the nostalgia.
I have said this for a long time and stand firmly beside it...
Skylanders desperately needs to bring back PvP, or Battle Mode if you prefer.
For those citing "disc space" or some argument along those lines, this is why I think it should come via a stand alone game, somewhere in the $19-$29 range.
It should work with ALL previously released Skylanders and the core of the game should be 1P vs CPU. Toss in an option to control the difficulty level of the AI and couple that with the ability to win in-game currency and take it over to current and future main games and you have a winning recipe.
I think Single Player should follow a format in Brawl and offer 8 character throw downs. Case in point, if I want to play as Terrafin and go up against 7 other AI characters, it should work. Similarly, if I want to play as Terrafin, team with AI Slam Bam, AI Dino-Rang, and AI Ghost Roaster and go up aginst 4 other AI characters we are home free...
Make it a similar set up for Local Multiplayer, but the big upgrade being 4 Player Local. Imagine you and 3 friends going up against a team of 4 AI Skylanders at max difficulty?
Lastly, yes...there needs to be online for the stand alone game...same concept as Single Player and Local Multiplayer, but with you being able to go against 1-7 others online. Toss in Leaderboards, Tournaments, and a comprehensive stat list for each Skylander (W-L sorted by character and series etc) and you are golden.
Allow lots of tweaking to items, food, regen, and Wow-Pows etc...
Lastly, and the biggest perk of "online" to me anyway, is the ability to update the game. New main title with 16 new characters? Put them up as DLC that you can either buy, or download and activate manually by purchasing the Skylander.
You know that summer time lull when we don't really have "another Skylander" and there isn't any info on the next game...This is a great time to offer new arenas.
The possibilities are limitless and well within the scope of the collective capabilities of Toys for Bob and Vicarious Visions.
I firmly believe that the best replay value from the series has stemmed from Battle Mode. Just as they could add arenas and update character rosters, new game modes could be made available to add-on to the base PvP.
I've pushed this hard for a few years now and still have the same stance...Going back thru these clips just reaffirmed it all the more.
What are your thoughts...Do you miss Battle Mode? Would you purchase a stand alone Battle Mode game if you knew it would be supported and regularly updated?
If you are a fan of this idea, make some noise and spread the word...As a hard core fan of the series, I want what is best for the franchise and I truly believe this is the right step to take. Again, 1P vs CPU being the foundation upon which everything else is built!
