This is the final boss move for the most evil, completely fused, impossible-to-remove nuts.
What you’re seeing:
The mechanic has given up on turning the nut entirely. Instead, he’s using an oxy-acetylene torch with a tiny cutting tip to precisely slice the nut in half, right down the side, from top to flat.
Key details:
• The bright white-hot flame is cutting a clean groove straight through the nut and stopping just before (or barely kissing) the bolt threads.
• Once the cut is deep enough, the nut collapses inward and releases its death grip on the bolt.
• A light tap with a chisel or screwdriver in the fresh slot usually splits it open like a cracked walnut.
