Fake news: The Comet Ping Pong pizzeria

An armed man from North Carolina, Edgar Maddison Welch, opened fire at the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria in Washington DC. He was driven by a fake online news story accusing the pizzeria of hosting a pedophile ring run by the Democratic Party leaders.
This is only one example of distorted and invented stories published in online news outlets and circulating in social media. Fake news has changed politics and are by some regarded as a threat to democracy itself. What is the relation between media and democracy and what strategies can be effective in debunking fake news and strengthen trust in journalism?
