How Distance Affects Your Portraits (It’s More Than You Think) with Lindsay Adler

Описание: Have you ever thought about how much your distance to the subject affects your portrait photography? It’s not just about aperture or focal length—your position/distance makes a surprising difference in how your photos look and feel.

In this video I break down an overlooked variable in portrait photography: camera-to-subject distance. I’ll show you how distance, focal length and depth of field work together, as well as considerations for perspective and distortion.

🎯 What You’ll Learn:

1. How distance changes depth of field and subject-background relationships. Hint: The closer you are to a subject, the LESS depth of field you have to work with!

2. The effects of distance (with focal length) on facial distortion and background compression. Hint: The closer you are to your subject, the larger it will appears in the frame PLUS you will begin to exaggerate features especially with wider focal length.

📚 Key Terms Covered:

1. Depth of Field: The range of sharpness in an image—affected by aperture, focal length, and subject distance.

2. Focal Length: The lens’s field of view and magnification, which influences compression and distortion.

3. Subject Distance: How close or far your camera is from the subject, directly affecting perspective and DOF.

4. Perspective Distortion: When features (like noses) appear exaggerated due to close proximity with wide-angle lenses.

5. Background Compression: How distant objects appear closer or further away, based on focal length and distance.

6. Macro Photography: Close-up photography that often results in razor-thin focus and requires control over depth of field.

7. Depth of Field Calculator: A tool that lets you preview how settings will affect sharpness before you even shoot.
