Hindustani classical singer and music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan died in Kolkata on January 9. He was 55 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. The famous vocalist was suffering from cancer and was admitted to a private health facility in Kolkata in November 2023.

A scion of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, Khan's musical journey was steeped in a rich legacy. As the great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan and the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Rashid Khan's artistry was nurtured by a lineage of musical giants. He developed great vocal prowess under the mentorship of Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. His unique style incorporated slow elaboration, showcasing a profound understanding of the intricacies and nuances of ragas.

The vocalist won several awards, including Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. In 2022, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian award. The West Bengal government also honoured Ustad Rashid Khan with the Banga Bibhushan and Sangeet Mahasamman awards.
