Thom Scott-Phillips is an Addison Wheeler Fellow in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology, at Durham University, UK.
Previous to his role at Durham, Thom worked in the Language Evolution Research Group at the University of Edinburgh. His work has received multiple prizes and accolades, including the New Investigator Award from the European Human Behaviour and Evolution Association in 2011, and the British Psychological Society's award for Outstanding Doctoral Research in 2010.
His talk will cover:
Language is an essential part of what makes us human. How did it evolve? Why are we the only species to communicate in this way? And what can an evolutionary perspective tell us about why languages are organised in the ways that they are? Speaking Our Minds, recently published by Palgrave MacMillan and already acclaimed as “the most important and best book ever written on the evolution of language”, integrates recent findings in cognitive science, linguistics, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, to decisively answer all these questions. In this talk the author, Thom Scott-Phillips, will present a general, accessible overview of some of the highlights of Speaking Our Minds.
