900 Global brings the sequel to the highly successful, but 3 year old, Reality with the all new Harsh Reality. Just like its predecessor, the harsh reality is powered inside by the disturbance core, but this time integrates the AI technology which lowers the RG and increases the differential and intermediate diff. On the outside is the all new and shockingly dull reserve blend 902 solid cover finished to 2000 grit out of the box.

For the layout, I went with a 5.5x4x2.5 2LS layout. This is similar to what I put on my magic gem, but with a longer pin to PAP distance and a shorter Pin to CoG distance. My assumption was that this piece was going to be ridiculously strong, so the long pin to PAP distance is meant to help the ball release off the end of the pattern, and the shorter pin to CoG was to help control the overall hook potential and get the ball to blend out the friction.

AND ON THE LANES… I actually couldn’t believe how good this thing looked. To be fair, this pattern was as fresh as it gets, so that helped a lot, but even still, WOW. The Harsh Reality was surprisingly effective at clearing the front part of the lane and not overdoing it once it found the dry part of the lane. The shape was really reminiscent of the original Hammer Envy which is a piece I loved to throw, so maybe there’s something to these orange solid asyms.

But my favorite part about throwing this one was how mean it was through the pins. When I throw big asyms like this, I love it when they roll heavy through the pocket, and this Harsh Reality balances the cover and core strength really well to hit pins hard. The shots that got to the pocket were almost a sure thing to strike, and thats a level of performance i can get behind.

On the list of potential downsides, it is still a dull, solid asym. There is a right time and place to use a piece like this, and that is on fresh conditions. This is not a do everything type of piece, and should be treated as such. When its right, like it is in these shots, look out because its going to be great, but when its not, it’s going to be vital to have a couple other pieces to go with it that compliment it well.

That’s when I would look at pairing this one with the all new Attention Star from Roto Grip and the 900 Global Sublime. The Attention Star is the true successor to the Altered Reality, so its similar in overall strength to the Harsh Reality, just substantially cleaner. Then the Sublime is a fast spinning hybrid symmetrical piece that can be your more benchmark style piece while still having a shinier cover to offset how much the reality is going to chew up an oil pattern.

Jumping to our crossbrand comparions, I first took a look at the Extreme Envy from Hammer and here I see a pretty similar reaction with one key difference. The Extreme Envy has a high intermediate differential, and causes the ball to labor a bit more off the spot. The balls are similar in overall strength, but those with less axis rotation will appreciate the Extreme Envy just a bit more as the core is meant to do more of the work for you.

Then I grabbed the Pride Dynasty, matched the surface grit to the Harsh Reality, and here you can see what a difference surface can make. I think if I had left it lane shined up, it would have been good in the same part of the lane as the Reality, but that fresh cover on the already cover dominant Pride forces me inside quickly to find the pocket, and even further in to strike.

But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is balanced bowlers. Surprisingly, this one feels like a piece that you’ll be able to use regularly in a league setting, but those that have a matched up ball speed and rev rate will really appreciate the matched up core and cover strength out of the harsh reality as they’ll be able to go where the strikes are without worrying about the ball being too much and leaving too many corner pins.

The second recommendation is for Lefties. This one is a sure fire way to beat urethane carry down, and the more you roll it, the better it looks. These two things make the harsh reality a dream for southpaws, and will give them a ton of options on how to get the ball to and through the pins.
