Rich results as autumn closes in.
Chinese cabbage – the harvest of two types, transplanted 18th August from a 2nd August sowing. That’s 83 days from seed to these wonderful hearts of tender leaves.
Late summer is the best time to sow Chinese cabbage, not in spring. Their natural rhythm is to flower in early summer, so spring sowings cannot grow large before sending up a flowering stem.
By contrast, in autumn they keep growing until the centre is dense with pale leaves — either long and thin like the Granat, or round and fat like the Questar F1.
I twist them out to harvest, cutting higher up and peeling away the scrappy leaves to reveal the beauty of the heart.
We sprayed with Bacillus thuringiensis, a soil bacteria that makes the leaves indigestible to caterpillars. Each weighs over half a kilo — beautiful leaves for kimchi, stir-fry or salad.
Filmed 24th October by Carly Dutton-Edwards, in Somerset at Homeacres no dig garden.
