I’m deeply interested in the population growth of cities and the patterns of urban development around the world. I enjoy exploring how cities evolve over time and what drives their expansion and change. My fascination extends to the geography of cities, understanding their structure, layout, and spatial dynamics. I like to analyze these trends in a statistical way, using data visualization tools such as charts and racing bar charts to bring urban growth to life. Also in city games on the website PurposeGames.
-------------------------------------------------
1900–1910: The "Metropolis Era" – Massive industrial migration fuels the rise of Großstädte (cities over 100k), with Berlin exploding to 2 million residents.

1920: Greater Berlin Act – Seven cities and 59 communities merge into "Greater Berlin," creating one of the world's most populous and geographically largest cities overnight.

1920s: New Frankfurt & Bauhaus – Modernist social housing projects (like Ernst May’s Das Neue Frankfurt) attempt to solve the chronic urban housing shortage.

1930s: The Autobahn Impact – Construction of the world’s first high-speed highway network begins to link German urban centers, laying the groundwork for future suburbanization.

1943–1945: The Ruin Years – WWII Allied bombing campaigns level nearly 80% of many city centers, including Dresden, Cologne, and Hamburg, displacing millions.

1948: The Currency Reform – The introduction of the Deutsche Mark triggers the Wirtschaftswunder (Economic Miracle), sparking rapid, car-centric post-war reconstruction.

1950s: The Socialist Model City – In East Germany, cities like Eisenhüttenstadt (Stalinstadt) are built from scratch as "ideal" socialist industrial centers.

1960s: Concrete Expansion – To house a booming workforce, both Germanies build massive high-rise "satellite towns" like West Berlin’s Gropiusstadt and East Berlin’s Marzahn.

1970s: The Pedestrian Turn – Reacting to smog and traffic, West German cities begin converting historic central streets into Fußgängerzonen (pedestrian zones).

1989–1990: The Wall Falls – Reunification ends the physical division of Berlin and triggers a massive population flight (Ostflucht) from East German industrial cities to the West.

1991–2000: The Capital Shift – Berlin undergoes a "building boom" as the seat of government moves from Bonn back to the historic capital.

2000s: Post-Industrial Shrinking – Former mining and steel hubs (especially in the Ruhr and East) struggle with "shrinking city" syndrome as heavy industry vanishes.

2015: The Migration Wave – Over a million refugees arrive, leading to an immediate demand for urban housing and social integration in major metropolitan hubs.

2020–2022: Pandemic Decentralization – Remote work trends cause a slight cooling of "city core" demand as people seek larger homes in the "Speckgürtel" (suburban bacon belt).

2023–2026: The "Green" Re-Urbanization – Contemporary German urban planning focuses on the Schwammstadt (Sponge City) concept to combat climate change and extreme heat.
