In this video I dive into the history of human evil in my search to answer one question: Are we all monsters?
From the Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment and Milgram's investigation of obedience to Arendt's concept of the banality of evil and Le Bon's theory of crowd psychology, I look into different perspectives on the human capacity to commit atrocities. What does it take for morality to break down? Are we all obedient in nature? Is evil truly 'banal' or is the line between good and evil more clearly definable? Are crowds dangerous? Would we all have been nazis, had we been raised at the wrong place at the wrong time?
Lastly, I take a critical look at these very same theories, and discuss whether reality is truly as simple as Milgram, Zimbardo or Le Bon would have it seem, or if it is indeed more nuanced.
