Burgundy is a region of France that covers the eastern portion of its hexagonal shape. It’s a sparsely populated region, which makes it the perfect place to make France’s most renowned export. Wine. The Burgundians are known for making some of the best wine in the world and people flock from far and wide to sample the spoils of its numerous vineyards. We went in winter, but that just gave us more excuse to sample its wines and to indulge in a spot of fine dining.
Dijon is the capital of Burgundy. Historically, Burgundy was a Kingdom in its own right. Or rather, a Duchy. Ruled from Dijon, the Duchy of Burgundy was considered one of the most influential in Europe, particularly during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Palace of the Dukes sits proudly at the centre of the city, but nowadays it is just a museum as the Duchy was absorbed into France during the reign of Louis XI because male dynastic line of the Burgundians had died out. Subsequently, Burgundy passed into French hands without any bloodshed or anyone having anything to say about it.
Dijon’s most famous export is, of course, mustard. The city has been the centre of mustard-making since the Middle Ages, but the term “Dijon Mustard” doesn’t actually mean it comes from Dijon. So its name is a lie? It just means that the technique for making that type of mustard was created in Dijon.
One of the most exclusive vineyards in France is the Clos de Vougeot. Designated grand cru, the wine produced here is renowned for its exceptionally refined palate. The price of one bottle depends on its vintage, but the very cheapest you can buy one is in three figures, with the average price about £400.
So Beaune’s most famous landmark is not a cathedral or a chateau or a square, but instead a hospital. Founded in 1443, it was built as a hospital for the poor. Following the Hundred Years’ War, many of the people of Beaune were destitute and wounded from fighting. So the Hospices de Beaune was built to care for them, funded by the Duke. It actually remained as a hospital right until 1971.
Nowadays, the French countryside is romanticised as wholesome, earthy and self-sufficient. And there’s a lot of truth to that. The French pride themselves with sourcing local ingredients and why would you import foods from abroad when you can produce some of the finest foods right here on your own doorstep? French wine, cheese, bread, patisserie and charcuterie are some of the best in the world, and who doesn’t like all of that? And while many countries are publicised as “foodie destinations”, nowhere can claim that title much more than France.
Our final stop is Vezelay Abbey, which is a truly stunning mausoleum of a building. The church is said to house relics from Mary Magdalene, so pilgrims flocked from fair and wide to visit them. The town is actually tiny, not much more than a village, but this enormous church was built in the twelfth century to deal with all these pilgrims and is attached to a Benedictine Abbey. It really is a stunningly beautiful building. But it sits in the middle of the countryside, with very little else around it.
Our trip to Burgundy was great. We always love the French countryside. And although the weather wasn’t amazing, we can only imagine just how beautiful it is here at the height of summer. But even when there isn’t the weather, there is always the wine. Which is, I think, the unofficial slogan of the United Kingdom nowadays too...
