Urban Zulu, that presented the fall winter 2016 collection during last edition of South African Fashion Week, is a design house that focuses on both ready-to-wear and bespoke clothing. The label is managed by self-taught fashion designer Papy Kaluw. The direct translation of the word “Zulu” means Heaven. Urban Zulu embodies the ideal of the Urban Heaven. Inspired by the spiritual, connected to the beauty and texture of the physical, Urban Zulu reflects the balance between the higher ideals of love and unity and practical functionality. The “Urban” element of the brand speaks to the fast paced lifestyle demands of modern living. Their clothes remain functional and relevant in contemporary society, yet still reflect the unique nuances of their African identity.
General Manager of the company told: "We specialize in ready-to-wear clothing, as well as bespoke clothing and accessory designs. Our hallmark is originality, based on existing trends, and our distinct design style. Unlike local commercial brands which take their direction from Europe and abroad, we use locally available material and include African materials and prints as African culture is what we breathe. At the same time we take direction from the streets of Jozi and the entire continent. Urban Zulu is more than just a clothing brand. It is more than just a lifestyle. Urban Zulu is a Movement of Oneness".
All garments are handmade in Johannesburg and materials are sourced locally. The urban element of the brand connects with the fast-paced lifestyle of modern living, while reflecting the nuances of an African identity.
