A man was driving fast on the highway when a police officer pulled him over for speeding.

The officer walked to the driver’s window and said, “Sir, you were going 80 miles per hour.”

The man smiled and replied, “That’s not true, officer. I had the car set to go 60. Maybe your radar gun is wrong.”

But before he could say more, his wife—sitting next to him and knitting—spoke up kindly, “Oh honey, don’t lie. This car doesn’t even have cruise control.”

The man shot her an angry look as the officer began writing a speeding ticket.

The man whispered, “Can you please stop talking?”

But the wife just smiled and said, “Well, at least the radar detector beeped before you got caught.”

The officer looked up, “Radar detector?” He immediately started writing a second traffic ticket—because radar detectors are illegal in the state.

Now the man’s face turned red. Leaning toward his wife, he hissed, “Please… just… be… quiet.”

The officer then noticed something else. “Sir, you’re not wearing your seatbelt. That’s a $75 fine.”

The man quickly said, “I was wearing it, I just took it off to get my license from my pocket.”

Once again, his wife—still calmly knitting—said, “Oh no dear, you never wear a seatbelt.”

The officer started writing a third ticket.

The man exploded, “Why can’t you just be quiet?!”

The officer turned to the wife and asked, “Ma’am, does your husband always talk to you like this?”

The wife smiled sweetly and said, “Only when he’s been drinking.”
