In contrast to packed bed chromatography a monolith does not consist of single particles but of a single piece of monolithic material and can thus be seen as a continuous stationary phase, with long branched macro and mesopores. Due to the fact that monoliths are not single particles, it is possible to work with significantly lower pressures than with conventional chromatography.
