I interviewed Beth Ratay of the University of New Mexico and the Active Learning Through Opera (ALTO) program at the Santa Fe Opera to learn about how we teach children opera composing and how we can be hopeful for the future of music.
Three Questions With.... is the series where I try to split the difference between a 30 second viral clip and a 3 hour mega-conversation, so that you can get the best information from great musicians.

American Prize finalist and OPERA America Discovery Grant awardee Beth Ratay has had her music performed by diverse ensembles around the world. Her studies on the relationship of text to music in the work of Leoš Janáček and symmetric or layered musical structures in the music of Harrison Birtwistle strongly informs her own compositions. Beth is a strong and continued supporter of new music as the President of the Boston New Music Initiative.
Ratay is also active as a performer. On her youtube channel she performs works, mostly by living composers, for flute and/or voice. She was also the principal flutist for the University of California, Santa Cruz Orchestra and for the April in Santa Cruz New Music Festival for three consecutive years and is a current member of the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus.
Dr. Ratay also enjoys teaching, and currently teaches Theory and Composition at the University of New Mexico as well as with the Active Learning Through Opera (ALTO) program at the Santa Fe Opera. She has previously taught at Bunker Hill Community College, Roxbury Community College, Hartnell College, Gavilan College, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Beth currently lives with her amazing family including one husband, two sons, and two cats in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
