Neston Market Town Walk | The Wirral | English Countryside | 4K

Описание: On a cold autumn morning this walk is around the lovely market town of Neston on The Wirral Peninsula in England. Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1085 and originating from the Saxon word for 'settlement by the headland' Neston was once an important centre for trade on The Wirral from the mid 1500's to the early 1700's. As the River Dee became less accessible, trade moved away and the town experienced a decline which was not recovered from until the railways arrived in the mid 1800's and 2 lines were constructed. One linking Neston with Chester/West Kirby and the other with Wrexham/Bidston. While the Wrexham/Bidston line is still open today, the Chester/West Kirby line was closed to passengers in 1956 and to freight in 1962. The old line became derelict until plans were made to develop it into a country park. Work started in 1969 and was completed in 1973 with the old line becoming The Wirral Way. This lovely footpath and cycle path is 12 miles long and runs from West Kirby in the north to Hooton in the south. There is also a 10 mile bridlepath running along side. Our walk today begins at the beautiful sandstone church of St Mary's and St Helen's which is a Grade II listed building. The tower is the oldest part of the church dating back to the 14th century. Neston today has many interesting shops, places to eat and drink and a traditional Friday market. The cross at the centre of the town is actually a fountain that was built in 1882 on the site of the old public well which was sunk in 1865 and was not popular with the towns residents as some felt it would cause a nuisance. Some of the buildings we pass today are the Old Bank House built in 1702, Elmhurst built in 1717, Elm Grove House built in the mid 18th Century and Jackson's Tower built in 1895. After heading down on to a section of The Wirral Way, where a practice hockey game was going on nearby, we end our walk in the beautiful neighbouring coastal village of Parkgate overlooking the salt marsh and across to North Wales.
