You should remove a window motor when the power window stops working correctly and the diagnosis confirms the motor is the problem. Here are the most common situations where removing the window motor becomes necessary:
1. The window doesn’t move at all
If you press the switch and nothing happens—no noise, no movement—the motor may be burned out.
Before removal, always check:
The fuse
The switch
Power and ground reaching the motor
If these are good → motor removal is justified.
2. The motor makes noise but the window doesn’t move
This usually means the regulator is broken, but sometimes the motor gear inside is worn or stripped.
If the motor spins freely with no load → remove and inspect the motor.
3. The window moves slowly or intermittently
A tired or weak motor can’t produce enough torque.
If voltage supply is good (12V+) but the motor struggles → time to remove and replace the motor.
4. Overheating or clicking noise from the door
An overheated motor may stop working temporarily. Repeated overheating means:
Internal wear
Failing brushes
Armature problems
In this case, removing the motor is recommended before it fails completely.
5. Visible corrosion or water damage
If water enters the door (common after bad weatherstrips), the motor can rust and seize.
If you notice moisture inside the door panel → motor removal may prevent bigger damage.
6. When replacing or servicing the regulator
Sometimes you need to remove the motor just to access or replace the regulator, even if the motor still works. Many cars have integrated regulator–motor assemblies.
