Slavic roots for “end” and “beginning” are related through the old Indo-European root “kon / ken / čin / čen,” which embraces meanings of start, finish, and restart. In East Slavic languages, the words “načęlo” (beginning) and “koneç” (end) are therefore related, with “koneç” actually being a diminutive for “kon” (starting order). From the very same root comes the English word “recent,” meaning lately done, just being started, new, fresh, young. The end is a small beginning!

The recent JetLAG was themed Neoteric, and so it was. It fell on the Solstice, the longest day, where farewells meet greetings. It also coincided with the Eastern Pentecost, a day of the Comforting Spirit, of speaking in tongues and understanding them, of the collective synergetic service beyond barriers. And these are just the general serendipities among many other small miracles that happened during these days, including how nature behaved. Together we faced challenges, turned barriers into springboards, together we created the 15th JetLAG, and for the 15th time it recreated us.

As always, we had many rooms to find what you love, love what you find, see something familiar in a new way, break the mold, witness amazing acts of art, meet dozens of people you hadn’t seen in a lifetime. And now that it has ended, you feel like something was missed. You missed saying goodbye to Peaceful Valley, not having breathed its air enough. You missed hearing someone, watching someone, hugging someone, doing something you were committed to do. When is the next time?

The end is always rather sad. But the consolation is that the end is a start. This is what JetLAG reminds us about and teaches us to feel grateful for.
