In this video we explore the formula that Joan Miro used to create great art: primary colors, dull backgrounds, strong lines, symbols and drips. It is a great excuse to play with different paint types and new modes of applying paint.
The exercise:
Step 1 : Paint the background of your canvas a desaturated/dull color like a muted green, muted blue, dull yellow or gray. Allow that to dry completely.
Step 2: Use a dropper or a brush full of paint to drip drops of black paint onto the canvas. Be strategic in filling the canvas in an interesting way. Think about Miro's symbols or create symbols of your own.
Step 3: Decide if you want a minimal painting with only a few shapes or if you want to fill the entire painting as a mosaic pattern. Maximalist vs. Minimalist.
Step 4: Allow that black paint to dry completely. Then judiciously paint the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) into some of the negative shapes that your lines have created. Look for places where your primary color will be dynamic like over a bit of complementary color.
Step 5: See where you painting could use a little burst of light and paint white shapes or dots there.
Step 6: See if you painting has dull areas and consider adding more small bits of color there.
