Discover the enchanting Taye Macha dance, a historic and culturally significant dance form that originated in Pokhara over 150 years ago. Rooted deeply in the traditions of the Newar community, this dance is a captivating fusion of the Dahi Leela and the legendary tales of Lord Krishna, embodying the essence of Newar heritage.
Performed by four fairies (Pari) dressed in vibrant colors—Red, Pink, Yellow, and Green—this dance is a visual spectacle. Accompanying these fairies is a humorous character known as Lakhar Pandey (the Joker), adding a playful element to the performance.
The Newari people of Pokhara, who migrated from Bhaktapur around 300 years ago, brought with them this dance form, which has since evolved and become a cherished part of Pokhara’s cultural fabric. The dance is performed to the rhythm of the traditional Tayemacha Taal, with additional tunes borrowed from the Bhairab dance. The unique Khin Baaja (Drum) beat and the rare Dhalki Taal are integral to the performance, making the dance a mesmerizing experience.
Traditionally, the Taye Macha dance would be performed in the old areas of Pokhara, covering 6-7 toles during the Saparu festival. Today, it has expanded to over 32 toles, showcasing the dance's growing popularity and cultural significance. The dance begins and ends with the sacred Dya Lhya ritual, further emphasizing its deep cultural roots.
In recent years, the Newa Khala has taken the initiative to organize annual Taye Macha dance competitions, ensuring that this vibrant tradition continues to thrive and be celebrated by future generations.
