The production of 1955 Corvettes began in October 28, 1954 with styling that remained the same as the 1954 model, except an Ed Cole small-block V-8 engine option was added. Corvettes ordered with the V-8 also got a distinctive gold emblem on the front fenders with a large "V" in the word "CheVrolet". The V-8 models also got a new tachometer (6,000rpm in 1,000 increments) and an updated 12-volt electrical system while the 6-cylinder cars kept the 5,000rpm tachometer and 6-volt electrical system and from the 53's and 54's.
The V-8 certainly did wonders for the Corvette's performance (0-to-60 in 8.7, 0-to-100 in 24.7 vs. 6-cyl times of 0-to-60 in 11 and 0-to-100 in 41), but had little sales impact. The V-8 was essentially the same engine that became an option in 1955 Chevy passenger cars, but the Corvette version ran a special camshaft that raised horsepower by over 20% to 195bhp at 5,000rpm. Replacing the finicky multiple carbs was a single Carter four-barrel version.
