Gulf nations have become targets for Iran as it lashes out against America's allies in retaliation for the strikes on its territory over the weekend.
The attack on Iran by Israel and the US has already spiralled into a regional conflict, with hundreds of people killed and drones hitting targets as far as Cyprus.
The British government believes hundreds of thousands of UK citizens are in the region, and is now drawing up plans to evacuate them.
This has led to the airspace in the world's most important travel hubs being closed for the foreseeable future. About half a million passengers use airports in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi each day.
