Thousands celebrate as pro-Kurdish party heads for parliament

Описание: (24 Jun 2018) Thousands of people were celebrating after a pro-Kurdish party passed a difficult electoral threshold to enter parliament in the predominantly Kurdish southeastern city of Diyarbakir.
Revelers waved Peoples' Democratic Party or HDP's flags and blazed their car horns. Nejdet Erke said he had since the morning been "waiting for this emotion."
Despite no media coverage and a crackdown, HDP beat a 10 percent threshold and according to unofficial results, will be the third largest party in parliament holding 67 seats.
Nine lawmakers, including presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas, and thousands of party members are in prison on alleged terror charges with links to outlawed Kurdish insurgents.
A fragile peace process with Kurdish insurgents fell apart in 2015 and led to clashes in southeastern cities.
Davut Kaymaz from the historic Sur district, destroyed during clashes, said "I have seen many cruelties here… now we are celebrating."
