Only 12 U.S. presidents ever achieved the rank of general, but who were they, and who is the highest-ranking? Well, 4 presidents were the 1-star brigadier general: 14th President Franklin Pierce, 17th President Andrew Johnson, 21st President Chester A. Arthur, and 23rd President Benjamin Harrison. Next are the 2-star major generals, which include 7th President Andrew Jackson, 9th President William Henry Harrison, 12th President Zachary Taylor, 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes, and 20th President James Garfield. But the next 3 were some of the highest-ranking generals in U.S. history. 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower is the only president to wear 5 stars, being the rank of General of the Army during World War II. 2. However, 2 other presidents have even surpassed this rank, both being promoted posthumously. 1st President George Washington and 18th President Ulysses S. Grant were both promoted to the rank “General of the Armies." Although not officially a “6-star rank," it is higher than the 5-star rank “General of the Army," making Washington and Grant the highest-ranking generals to become president.
