Of all the train horns out there, the Nathan P5 is one that many railfans cherish. The P5 was originally developed in the 1950s alongside Nathan's M5 horn, to produce a mellower sound. Nathan's P-Series bells were sand-cast as opposed to die cast, producing a different acoustic that many people love. The original P5 horns, most of which are now extinct from the rails, played a 5-note chord. To musicians, this chord was a C#,E,G,A,C#. In 1978, though, Nathan contracted out casting of their P-chimes, resulting in a new sound. These "new cast" horns can still be found on many railroads, with Norfolk Southern hosting the most of all the Class 1s. All horns in this video are new cast, with the exception of 1:43, which is a mixed cast horn.
The horn at 3:02 is also a P5, but has unfortunately fouled quite significantly recently.
