STORYLINE:

The new UN special representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, sent to Baghdad to try and help re-build the country's government, met with leading politician Adnan Pachachi in the Iraqi capital, on Sunday.

De Mello's mandate stems from a UN Security Council resolution and his tasks range from reconstruction to refugee return, economic development to legal reform and civilian administration to human rights and humanitarian relief.

Adnan Pachachi, a onetime Iraqi foreign minister, returned to the country after a 33-year exile in the West following the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime by American-led forces. He said U.N involvement in the country's reconstruction was welcomed.

De Mello is a veteran diplomat who comes to the sensitive Iraq post after serving for less than nine months as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

He has wide experience of nation-building within the United Nations, having run the peacekeeping mission in East Timor for two and a half years before it won independence in May 2002.
