We continue to build a garden where there is no real soil. Conditioning the straw bales is simple enough, but is very important. Traditional soil gardening under these conditions is daunting! Our soil is devoid of humus. Virtually none to be found.
We've been living on our homestead for almost 15 years, and have been methodically developing garden beds with humus. Unfortunately there is a real lack of green material and compost with which to work.
That all changed late last year when we found an affordable supply of straw bales. 60 in all! We planned to compost it for use in our existing garden, but a friend convinced us to make a straw bale garden.
Our objective is to grow more of our own food for dietary reasons, and the security of knowing how our food has been raised. We are sustainable with a limited number of plants, and are working towards greater self sufficiency.
We are embarking on a new gardening year. One that relies on our raised wicking beds and our off grid greenhouse.
BrainStorm Acres challenge is multiplied since we are off grid relying on solar power and water catchment.
Thanks for joining us on our continuing journey.
Take care.
