Migrants from Bijapur District of Karnataka, the Kunchikorve community has evolved over the years. From being touted as criminals during the British era to engaging in beggary, most members of the community have been involved in diverse activities to earn their livelihoods. Through a series of photographs, Raju Dargude, a PUKAR Barefoot Researcher also speaks about how despite these changes, the ancestral occupation of broom-making continues to be practiced by the community. In fact, in order to keep up with the rise in overall standard of living, some of the men-folk have taken up jobs in the municipal corporation in the waste-cleaning department.
Thus, in the face of redevelopment, the traditional community fears that its voices might go unheard. Is its existence on the brink of extinction?
