As MMV celebrates International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we are reminded that protecting indigenous communities from malaria and ensuring they have proper access to treatments is one of the keys to malaria elimination. This year, the Brazilian government took a big step towards achieving its malaria elimination goal by prioritizing the Yanomami people in its rollout of tafenoquine, a single-dose radical cure for relapsing P. vivax malaria. The Yanomami live in the Amazonian rainforest, where 90% of all malaria infections occur.
In this video, Director of Research at the Fundação de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado, Dr Marcus Lacerda explains that this decision can have a significant social and health impact on the Yanomami community, and that if the implementation of tafenoquine worked for them, it can do the same throughout the Amazon region.
