Starbound 1.3 mechs are designed so you can't take them on storyline missions, challenge rooms or anything else you don't beam down to in the regular fashion. But using the Starbound Mech Deployer mod, you can deploy your mech in these places.

In this video we take our Cheese Shark mech into one of the post-endgame Starbound Ancient Vaults using the Mech Deployer to see if we have a better experience than on the missions.

We soon discover where you can't take the mech and how long you can hold up inside a mech in the Ancient Vaults. To improve our chances, we swap our vanilla Starbound mech to a modded Mechs XS Modular Edition mech, whose mod design allows you a greater degree of movement freedom and gets you through some of the doors you can't normally.

In this Starbound Mechs vs Ancient Vaults video we visit three vaults with two mechs, eventually reaching one of the Vault bosses where we see if the fight goes any better with a mech than as a vulnerable Spoiler Ape!
