Simple Instructions:
Every day this week — one day at a time — stay off of your personal social media.
This includes Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and any other app that you know connects you impersonally and/or anonymously to the lives and opinions of the people around you.
If your professional work includes managing social media, you may still continue to do that without penalty, but you’ll need to be able to draw a clear line between business and personal activity.
Why Is This Practice Important?
We call it “social,” but it is far from it. Instead of being media that really connects us to our friends, family, and personal networks, social media tends to be a platform to make a good impression, an engine of personal comparison, and an arena of anger and discontent. What’s more, it's a total time suck.
Think about it — when was the last time you spent some really productive time cruising one of your feeds? When you saw what someone else was up to and didn’t automatically wonder if their lives were better than yours? Or offered a personal opinion only to be totally misunderstood and start a riot of disagreement? How many times have you thought, “I should really be careful what I say here?” It doesn’t sound particularly social, does it?
So take back your social life! There are far better ways to connect to the people most important to you, even if those connections happen at the rate of one or two individuals a day or a week. Your social life isn’t a “startup.” It doesn’t have to be scalable. It has to be meaningful. Meaning doesn’t come in 140 characters, it comes in being present to people and who they are. Your true social medium is life.
