The Centre of Contemporary Dance works to put these performances together through a multidisciplinary approach, hence encouraging dancers to explore an independent movement vocabulary through a mentorship program, discovering one's own artistic practice and exposure. The platform of Interactions play a vital role in shaping the canvas of Contemporary Dance in the city of Pune.
Every year, we bring together an evening of dialogues between the audience, practitioners and arts. The platform encourages individuals to reflect and put together a short work with all the logistical support by the Avartan Dance Foundation. This takes them closer to experience a whole process of creating Contemporary Work. Over 10 years, various themes have been curated and put forth by Contemporary/Classical dancers as a starting point towards their choreographic explorations.
INTERACTIONS 2023:
In light of the significant conversations happening around mental health in present times, our theme for this Interactions this year was to use art & performances to foster mental health awareness.
We presented 5 solo works around different aspects of mental health and contemporary dance. The themes include menopause, ADHD, dementia, OCD and insomnia, and the idea was to look at the movement pattern to build and understand the theme. All performers have a training in dance and psychology. The first draft of these works-in-progress received a very positive response from the audience.
1. Who am I now by Shweta Vetal
Synopsis: The solo is an attempt to understand and portray the condition of menopause and empty nest syndrome.
I waxed and waned like the moon,
To create was the only me that I knew.
My identity tied to my ability to nurture
Empty spaces they leave behind,
Who should I nurture now she asks,
Now that their wings are strong enough to carry them away.
2. The Rhythm of my Thoughts by Shruti Mehta
Synopsis - The solo piece portrayed how Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD affects one's ability to relax and enjoy life as they have disrupted routines, social problems and physical problems. The signs and symptoms, the reactions of the body having the disorder was also presented.
3. Me & The Roller Coaster Ride by Purva Deshpande
Synopsis - The movement piece is an attempt to understand what ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) might feel and look like in a person. The impulse that drives the disorder can change its form from hyperactivity to fatigue. Ironically, the most overtly active-looking and engaging person can feel alone in all the chaos surrounding them. The solo piece tries to navigate the disorder through the distorted perception of space and time.
4. On The Other Side Of by Tanvi Hegde
Synopsis - This piece attempts to trace the journey of a person grappling with dementia - and with it, a loss of being able to make sense of the world as they know it. As my memories start to slip away, am I slipping away from myself, too? Finding my way through a melody I'm losing.
5. Insomnia... A collage of emotions! by Kalyani
Synopsis - Have you ever experienced sleepless nights? A state with a tired and fatigued body with a restless mind within.
This is my attempt to explore the space full of emptiness... the state of wakefulness...Come, join me on this path of insomnia... Leading nowhere...
