STORYLINE:
Hundreds of shoppers braved the winter cold to get free food at prediction market startup Polymarket’s promotional free grocery store in Manhattan.
There are no cashiers. Each customer is assigned a personal shopper who helps fill up one tote bag - with some exceptions if you are buying for additional family members.
Polymarket’s campaign in West Village handing out free food comes after Kalshi, another online betting platform, gave out $50 in free groceries.
First in line, waiting in line from 6am, was retired paralegal Tori Hall, with a shopping wagon in tow. She says she picked up about $100 worth of groceries including fruit, eggs, cheese, pasta, detergent, and paper towels.
The free grocery store is open for limited hours through Sunday, or while supplies last. Polymarket said it would replenish stocks daily.
