When he's in the water, the only way to tell Jeffrey Saul apart from his teammates is the number on his cap.
When he's not in the water, he's a little more noticeable.
"I'm just used to having no foot," says the 15-year-old soon-to-be sophomore at Buchanan High School. "It's just something I grew being used to. At the age of seven, I lost my foot. It took me a few months to get used to it and then after that? I barely notice it now."
Jeffrey Saul was born with neurofibromatosis. He had a weak tibia bone and underwent 12 different surgeries before finally having his left foot amputated.
"I hate it when people tell me, 'You can't do it' because I'm missing a foot," he says. "So I like to prove to them that I can do it because missing a foot doesn't stop me."
It certainly doesn't.
Jeffrey played football in 5th and 6th grades and he rides his bike all the time. He just uses a prosthetic leg.
"His teammates respect him in the sense that, 'Well I don't know if I would be out here if I was in the same situation,'" says Dave Pickford, Buchanan's aquatics coach. "But the more he's out here, his situation becomes less apparent. He's just a typical freshman."
And soon he'll be a typical camper. Jeffrey Saul received a scholarship to attend next week's Amputee Coalition Youth Camp in Ohio. He'll be attending it for the fourth time.
"You get to meet other people who have the same...I guess you can call it...disability," says Jeffrey. "You get to just learn their story, share equalities with each other and just make new friends."
