Meaning
• ॐ / Aum – the primordial sound, the vibration of the universe.
• नमः / Namaḥ – salutations, bowing in reverence.
• शिवाय / Śivāya – to Śiva, the auspicious, the transformer, the pure consciousness.
• Kṛṣṇāya Vāsudevāya – Salutations to Krishna, son of Vasudeva, the all-pervading one.
• Haraye Paramātmane – To Hari, the supreme soul, remover of ignorance and bondage.
• Praṇataḥ Kleśa-Nāśāya – To the one who dissolves all suffering of surrendered beings.
• Govindāya Namo Namaḥ – Infinite prostrations to Govinda, protector and nourisher of life.
📖 Source
• In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Canto 8, Chapter 3), this mantra arises in the story of Gajendra Moksha. The elephant king Gajendra, trapped by a crocodile and unable to save himself, finally remembered the Supreme Lord. With deep surrender, he chanted this mantra. Moved by his pure devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared instantly and liberated him.
• The Bṛhan Nāradiya Purāṇa further praises this as a Mahāmantra – a chant capable of destroying kleshas (sorrows, afflictions, obstacles) and invoking Krishna as the eternal Paramātmā.
⸻
🌸
💫 Impact of the Chant
• Healing & Release: Like Gajendra, we too are bound by struggles – this mantra dissolves afflictions (kleshas).
• Mindfulness & Stillness: The rhythm and repetition calm the wandering mind.
• Union of Divine Energies: Krishna’s love and Shiva’s transformative energy create balance.
• Path of Surrender: Reminds us that true freedom comes when we let go and offer ourselves to the Divine.
⸻
🌺 How to Experience
• Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe with the chant.
• Chant along or simply listen with devotion.
• Let each cycle soften resistance, release burdens, and expand awareness.
⸻
✨ This mantra is part of my Kirtan for Mindfulness Series – an offering where ancient mantras meet the modern need for peace, healing, and presence.
May this chant bring you the same grace that liberated Gajendra — freedom from struggles, and remembrance of the eternal Divine within. 🌿
