NATO Mission Entrusted to Turkey! Turkish F-16s to Go on Standby

As part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, the Turkish Air Force will deploy 5 F-16 fighter jets and 76 personnel to Estonia from August through November 2026. Turkish pilots will maintain 24/7 alert and response duty to ensure the security of the airspace over Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

The Turkish Air Force is preparing to contribute once again to NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The 181st Jet Squadron (Pars Squadron), based at the 8th Main Jet Base Command in Diyarbakır, will be deployed to Amari Air Base in Estonia from August to November 2026.

As part of the mission, five F-16 fighter jets and 76 personnel will be deployed to Estonia. Turkish pilots will maintain 24/7 alert and response duty in the Baltic airspace to counter potential violations.

A CRITICAL MISSION FOR NATO’S EASTERN FLANK

Lieutenant Colonel Özdemir, Commander of the Pars Squadron, stated that the Baltic Air Policing mission aims to protect the airspace of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, noting that the mission holds strategic importance for the defense of NATO’s eastern flank.

Özdemir stated that the mission will make significant contributions to Turkey’s deterrence capabilities on the international stage and its ability to work in coordination with allies.

Özdemir, noting that the mission will be carried out with 5 aircraft and 76 personnel, said, “We will maintain a 24/7 alert and response duty against border violations and unidentified aircraft. We will carry out joint missions with other allied countries. We are fully confident that we will represent the Turkish flag in the best possible way in the skies over the Baltic region.”

Pilot First Lieutenant Özmen, meanwhile, emphasized that their success stems from intensive training and teamwork.

Noting that fighter jets operate not only through pilots but also thanks to the dedication of a broad team ranging from maintenance personnel to air traffic controllers, Özmen addressed young people aspiring to become pilots, saying, “This path requires unwavering discipline, an unending passion for learning, and an iron will. If you wish to experience this pride in the footsteps of the vision that ‘the future lies in the skies,’ the sky is waiting for you. Join us.”

ROMANIA MISSION ALSO PLANNED

The Turkish Air Force has previously successfully carried out air policing missions in Poland and Romania under the NATO framework. Following the Estonia mission, Turkey is scheduled to undertake the NATO Air Policing mission in Romania from December 2026 to March 2027.
