Influenced by a number of factors, including the violence of World War I, the democratic freedoms of the Weimar Republic, the burgeoning movement of expressionism, and the rise of Nazism, German artists between the two world wars expressed themselves in rich and powerful ways. Melissa Venator, curator at the Saint Louis Art Museum, takes us through an exhibition that demonstrates the variety and depth of their work. Titled “Day and Dream in Modern Germany” after a portfolio of work created by Max Beckmann, perhaps the best known of German painters of the time, the exhibition showcases prints, drawings, and photographs from 17 artists. @whoelselovesart
