ALEEM BUKHARI’S film, ‘Karmash’ cost just $150 to make and made it into the official selection at Cannes this year.
Featuring as a short in the sidebar - Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes) section, Bukhari talks to Asianculturevulture’s Brigitte Leloire Kerackian about the central themes of his film.
He also tells us how he made the film on a practical level.
A visual artist, who oftens works with photography and digital illustrations, this 15-minute film is infused with mythology and a fictional cultural identity, lending weight to its exploration of abstract ideas and feelings. Bukhari terms its “magical realism”.
There is only one actor – Irfan Noor K – who also played a significant part in not only bringing this story to the screen but also having a creative input and collaborating with Bukhari at a deeper level than simply as an actor in this drama.
In the official descriptions Noor plays ‘Babak Karmash’, the great grandson of Babak Karmash, the last heir of the tribe of Karmash.
It says too the film is “a portrait of a man on the verge of familial madness”.
Bukhari, who is a Pakistani artist, made this film with his friends and says very disarmingly he just submitted it to Cannes – having always been interested in the festival.
Congratulations!
