Transcendental Deduction of the Categories | Critique of Pure Reason

Описание: What are the necessary conditions for our intelligible experience of the world? The transcendental deduction attempts to show that Kant's categories of the understanding are those necessary conditions.


There are two arguments made, depending on which edition of the Critique of Pure Reason one reads. This video goes through the arguments made in the 2nd edition. I have put my notes about the argument in the first edition into a pinned comment.


The following is the main thrust of Kant's argument in section 20 of the second edition (P stands for premise and C for conclusion):


P1 – the manifold of representations in intuition are necessarily given to us in the synthetic unity of apperception (since only through this is the unity of intuition possible)
P2 – the manifold of representations in intuition are brought together in the synthetic unity of apperception by the faculty of the understanding
P3 – the faculty of the understanding is the logical functions of judgement
P4 – the manifold of representations in intuition are determined [generated (i.e. by consciousness)] with regard to [at least] one of the logical functions of judgement
P5 – the logical functions of judgement are the categories of understanding
C – therefore, the manifold of representations in intuition are necessarily subject to the categories of understanding
