Initially talking about Cello Ergonomics; this is an outpouring of some end of lesson considerations; Barbara Conable, Alexander technique/memories. Amit Peled lesson, etc.
(it is a casual summer lesson circumstance)
__________
Main points:
__________
Cello Ergonomics
to other topics
in segueing outpouring of ideas/ principles shared, and memories
•Arm is a constellation of joints
(Barbara Connable, Alexander technique)
• Overall body balance/energy to instrument discussed in considerations
• bodymap
— in considerations from the school of thought of Alexander technique, Marge Barstow, Barbara Conable, and all the others.
How this has brought these considerations into my cello playing.
• scapular movement in breathing as part of cello playing, especially coming more to the forefront of my considerations in my own, playing in lessons this summer as well
It’s about movement and freedom of energy delivering; (instead of opposition, and more debilitating holding patterns that are less productive in playing the cello)
Segues into…
Memories of lesson with Amit Peled
• opposite follow (with the bow) explained
• elliptical patterns of being on one side of the string toward the upper strings on down bow / and opposite side for up bow
• etc.
Segued into…
Memories of how Steven Isserlis — in his open and free his use of attention (observed from decades ago at a concert… (he was a soloist / I was a member of cello section)
Segueing into…
“it takes energy to shut out awareness”
(Barbara Conable’s principle shared with me in Alexander technique context.
It has many implications, —taken in faith… I consider, because it’s proved in consideration while doing and improving upon through practice in
an activity…
It is proven in the improvement that evolves from considering: •in including more things in my awareness, I am able to build in better quality of what I do. Instead of shutting out things to focus, ‘including more things in my awareness’ & in remaining aware of how my body feels, and how I am using my intention & attention in activity,— this has brought much deeper results into what I build up into my best playing. I continue to grow into more “best” in my playing over the years ).
_______________
Especially noting…
These are principles that I should continue to apply and hope students will apply to have freer use of ourself in our playing attention for more enjoyment, satisfaction and expression through music.
