Protests broke out across Kolkata and India against the assault and murder of a young doctor. It was at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College that the doctor faced the brutality.
This tragedy goes beyond borders. From Kolkata to New York, women are uniting in protest, demanding their right to live and work without fear. The recent ‘Reclaim the Night’ march was a cry heard around the world—a powerful reminder that the fight for women’s safety is far from over.
Kolkata was one of the safest cities when compared amongst the 19 metros in India. It had the lowest cases of rapes that were reported in the 2021 census.
The Indian central investigation agency swung into action and has taken over the case. The accused has been arrested and charges are being framed.
India has had a revolution of sorts where the citizenry has woken up and continues to pressure the legal system with faster trials. It was the notorious Nirbhaya gang rape case of 2012 that brought this debate centre stage.
Yet, more than a decade later, the promises of swift justice seem distant. West Bengal, where this latest crime occurred, struggles with a conviction rate of just 11% for crimes against women.
A large percentage of the workforce in the hospitals is women. So it becomes even more important for safety measures in place. A staggering 75% of doctors have faced violence at work, according to the Indian Medical Association. Despite government guidelines and allocated funds, only 40% of state-run hospitals have basic security measures like CCTV. This gap leaves countless women vulnerable.
In India, delayed justice remains a major hurdle, with over 4.4 million cases stuck in fast-track courts. Globally, similar challenges persist, underscoring the urgent need for systemic reform.
Until these voices translate into meaningful change—both in India and worldwide—the right to safety and dignity remains an unfinished battle for millions of women.
