HIDS is the host-based IDS (intrusion detection system) and OSSEC (Open Source HIDS SECurity) covered with comprehensive host-based intrusion detection across multiple platforms including Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSD, Windows, Mac, etc. Run the OSSEC on top of your machines. One machine should be a server and the other one should be the agent. Check out the OSSEC Manual to see tutorials on this lab's topic.
After running the OSSEC, start scanning the HIDS machine with Nmap. OSSEC should have detected several connections. Find the OSSEC logs and show the Nmap logs.
