NIN- The Becoming- Guitar Tutorial

My NIN Becoming Cover:    • Nine Inch Nails - The Becoming (Cover)  

This is a quick rundown of NIN The Becoming on guitar. This is the way I play it on acoustic but it works on electric just the same. At one point in the vid I say "I just made this up." Obviously, I didn't make up the song. I just made up how to play it, this way, by ear. Its just a rendition of the acoustic Becoming from the album, Still. In other words, I don't know exactly how NIN play it, and it really is better to just make up your own way. That's the beauty of a cover- interpretation.
Understand I don't have a video setup with lighting and sound yet. I've gotten about ten requests for tabs on this and its just easier for me to do a vid like this. Not pretty but it should get the job done if you want to learn how to play this song. If you are a beginner guitar player, you should use this video to practice learning from vids. You'll be a higher value player in the future if you can learn by watching. Anyone can do it if they put in a little time. Plus, if you can learn a song by watching someone, you don't have to rely on tabs which are sometimes really, really wrong!

So yeah, I'm a noob at this but everybody starts with shit vids right? It'll get better. I'm writing originals and recording them in a studio. You can hear some rough tracks on my Soundcloud now. I'm just gonna get like six songs done and make videos somehow for each song.

Here are some notes on what I say in the vid:

1. Standard tuning, key of G something
2. First half of riff,
On the E string play- 3333 4423423
On the A string play- 43
3. Second half of riff,
On the E string play- 333344111
On the D string play- 3
On the E string play- 1
Repeat step 2.
4. Bridge Chord progression:
Its just a bastardized form of G/F/C/Bb/F/C/Bb. Learning this by ear, I just figured out the root notes (as in vid. I put them there for better conceptual understanding), and then guessed on frets and fingerings until it sounded good on acoustic, for open mic purposes. Comment if you need a better explanation of it.
5. Right hand chugging- you don't have to mimic this. Play any strum pattern that fits the time signature. If you need to improve your chuggability, learn some Master of Puppets riffs and if you want the real pain, learn Bleed by meshuggah. Even if you don't get it right away, just practicing it will give your hand a new brain.
And just jam the hell out of this song! Play to the track on the album, play to my vid, whatever. Or just a metronome. If you repeat this enough, your natural chuggability will come out on its own.
