As hokey as it sounds, staying put has forced us to face that person we’ve managed to avoid (though he keeps showing up when we’re flossing or changing into shorts): ourselves. It’s an infinitely hummable tune, “Kumapit Ka Tuwing Lunes,” but when it first came out, it had an uncomfortable earnestness about it. I’ve told Vin Dancel time and again—in varying levels of sobriety, but that’s beside the point—that the Peryodiko debut may be the gold standard in Filipino electric folk, but it’s saddled with the weight of sincerity. And this song perhaps carries most of that weight. Adulthood. Responsibility. Disappointment. The perpetual orbit which persists despite (and occasionally without) you. All that discomfort, no doubt fueled by irony and cynicism, seems so silly now. “Lunes” is comforting as hell (and, man, Kakoy Legaspi’s fretwork in the last minute or so is the stuff religions are built on). It’s prosaic in all the right ways, because sometimes metaphor and a good turn of phrase just doesn’t cut it. Real life is prosaic, and it is also profane, especially when you’re forced to live it. Seeing this gem of a song transformed into video-as-letter, as reminder and appeal, is reinvigorating. Check on your friends. Reach out. Tell stories, but also ask to be told theirs.
