Your Show Plate Is Already Illegal — DVLA Wants To Make It Harder To Buy

The DVLA's business plan, published on 19 October 2026, says it will look at tightening the number plate supply regime. Every headline has framed it as a change to the rules — it isn't. Here's what's actually being considered, and the plate rule you can already be fined for today. What the business plan actually says
The DVLA's plan for 2026 to 2027 commits it to considering changes to "improve and enhance the number plate supply regime," to reinforce its role in tackling illegal number plates. The measures floated are:
• Tighter checks on number plate suppliers
• Improved intelligence sharing
• Possible changes to fees
• Closer cooperation with police forces and Trading Standards In a written parliamentary answer on 14 October 2026, the Department for Transport confirmed the DVLA is looking at options for a more robust and auditable Register of Number Plate Suppliers — including the scheme's fees, structure, resources and funding. That's it. No new rule has been announced. No date has been set. Nothing changes for you today. The bit the headlines buried
"Show plates" are not a legal category. They never were. A show plate is a plate made for display, events or off-road use — it is not legal for use on a public road, and it never has been. Fitting one isn't a grey area you can argue; the DVLA doesn't recognise show plate as a defence. So when you read that changes "could affect show plates," it doesn't mean show plates are legal now and might stop being legal. It means the DVLA may make it harder for suppliers to churn out plates that fail the standard in the first place.
