In a rarely-seen "snow squall warning," no travel was advised on I-90 east of Rapid City due to extreme whiteout conditions. The near-zero visibility created for life-threatening driving conditions. Many motorists and truckers sought refuge at truck stops along I-90 waiting for the weather to pass. Others braved the -40F wind chills to stock up on groceries ahead of Christmas weekend. The snow and wind are expected to die down across western South Dakota by Friday evening, though wind chills in excess of -55 are possible.
