With a $300 million budget, Brad Pitt in the lead role, and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski at the helm, expectations were sky-high. The film promised to blend high-octane action with the world of Formula 1 racing—but what audiences got instead was a bloated vanity project that fails both as a movie and as a representation of the sport.

Let’s start with what went wrong. For hardcore F1 fans, the inaccuracies are not just frustrating—they’re laughable. Brad Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, a fictional 50-something ex-driver, races in scenarios that defy the basic rules of Formula 1. He misses practice and qualifying but somehow still starts the race, blatantly cheats, crashes into others, and yet—no penalties, no disqualification. In reality, not only would he never get the mandatory FIA Super Licence, he wouldn’t even be considered fit enough to drive. The whole setup feels like someone trying to make an American football movie after watching only English rugby.

Instead of embracing the real-world drama that Formula 1 offers every season, the film invents absurd, over-the-top scenarios. It all ends up feeling like a shiny commercial trying to sell F1 to casual audiences by exaggerating everything. There’s nothing wrong with making it accessible—but F1 isn’t WWE. When a real driver like Max Verstappen can go from 17th to 1st in the pouring rain in Brazil 2024, it begs the question: why create artificial excitement when real-life stories are so much more powerful?

The story itself is painfully formulaic. A washed-up veteran returns to face a young, hot-headed rival. We’ve seen this before. Too many times. There’s nothing new or original here, and it certainly doesn't compare to films like Rush, which told the true and compelling story of James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s legendary rivalry.

That said, the movie isn’t without merit. Technically, it's stunning. The racing sequences are beautifully shot, with camera work that pushes boundaries. There are some fun Easter eggs and cameos for die-hard fans, and the inclusion of real-world F1 moments adds a touch of authenticity. But even that can’t hide the fact that many real drivers reportedly distanced themselves from the project—apart from Lewis Hamilton, who served as executive producer.

Brad Pitt's performance is passable but uninspired. He struggles to make his motivational lines land, and the character never truly feels believable. Damson Idris as the young rival gives a stronger performance, but the script doesn’t give him much to work with. Javier Bardem feels underused, and Kerry Condon—one of the film’s most promising talents—is reduced to a love interest, despite playing a technical director in a sport where women are only now starting to get real recognition. It’s a missed opportunity.

In the end, F1: The Movie feels like a flashy misfire—too caught up in spectacle, too disconnected from reality. It’s a film made for non-fans, but even they may find its story predictable and its drama forced. For F1 lovers, it’s little more than a frustrating, overproduced commercial.

So if you're thinking of spending two and a half hours watching this, maybe just tune into the real-life Austrian Grand Prix inste
