UN Urges Countries to Help Rohingya at Sea as Hundreds Land in Indonesia
The United Nations refugee agency urged countries to help Rohingya Muslims stranded at sea after at least 20 Rohingyas died and hundreds more landed in Indonesia.
Good morning everyone, I am Michaela Sopacua and this is SMAKARA News.
The Rohingya have long been persecuted in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. For years many have fled to neighboring states like Thailand and Bangladesh, and to Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled Myanmar in 2017 after a deadly crackdown by Myanmar's military. This is one of the big waves of the humanitarian crisis in the country. However until now Myanmar's military still denies committing crimes against humanity.
2022 could be one of the deadliest years at sea in almost a decade for the Rohingya. In early December, one boat carrying 180 people is believed to have sunk with all on board presumed dead, according to rights groups.
In the past year, nearly 1 million Rohingya live in crowded conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh. However it is reported that a growing number of the Rohingya are fleeing desperate conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh. Rights groups have recorded the number of people leaving the Bangladesh camps has significantly increased, from about 500 last year to an estimated 2,400 this year.
Meanwhile, it is reported on Monday that a boat washed ashore in Aceh province carrying 174 Rohingya. Local disaster agency officials said that most of the Rohingya are dehydrated, fatigued and in need of urgent medical care after weeks at sea.
Some survivors recounted stories of hunger and desperation, saying more than 20 of the passengers died on the 40-day journey from Bangladesh to Indonesia, as food supplies ran thin, and the boat sprang a leak.
Umar Farukh, one of the refugees said they came to Indonesia from the largest Bangladesh refugee camp with the hope that the Indonesian people would give them the opportunity of education.
The landing in Indonesia on Monday was the latest in a series of Rohingya boat landings and rescues around the region in recent weeks. It is prompting Bangladesh authorities to try and stop the Rohingya from risking their lives on boats to Southeast Asia.
This is the latest news about the arrival of Rohingya refugees. Stay tuned on this channel for

Coming up: The revival of Indonesian traditional fabrics among the youth.
Traditional fabrics have grown in popularity among Indonesians, with many experimenting to pair them with a modern style for formal or everyday outfits.
How do young Indonesians perceive traditional fabrics? And how using traditional fabrics for clothing styles become an increasing trend?
Stay tuned for the upcoming news.
In recent years there is an increasing trend in using traditional fabrics for a range of clothing styles and sizes.
A 25-year-old art program manager named Salsabila Ramadita, or Bila, is one of the young people captivated by these traditional fabrics.
Bila has always been interested in fashion and she enjoys exploring different fabrics to create unique outfits. Her interest in Indonesian traditional fabrics first grew during her studies in France where she began wearing them more frequently and made them her daily outfit inspiration.
Aiming to further promote traditional Indonesian fabrics among the general public, especially the
youth, Bila has established her own brand on Instagram under the handle @paume.studio
The brand is how Bila contributes and adds more value to traditional fabrics, transforming them from ordinary fabric material into other fashion products.
Her affinity for designing and wearing traditional fabric outfits has inspired many people to come up with their styles by combining them with a more modern approach. Some even start studying the fabrics.
A similar experience from Ai Syarif, a chief creative of the Dan Liris Group, an Indonesian textile and garment manufacturer.
Ai wears outfits made of traditional fabrics for his business trips with the cultural heritage
preservation organization called Warisan Budaya Indonesia. He is committed to implementing a modern approach to his traditional outfits, mainly to prove these fabrics, like batik, are not as old-school and outdated as some might purport.
According to Ai, the government support to the local fabric industry is very important, especially to maintain the rise of traditional fabric trends, given how it has tremendously ‘bolstered local designers’ in terms of creativity and productivity.
That is the news for today, I’m Michaela Sopacua, have a wonderful weekend and thank you for watching. This is SMAKARA News.
