Описание: At the end of a week that featured multiple deaths of Americans engaged in political protest and in which President Trump in turns encouraged, endorsed or excused the decent into violence, I pull back from the details to ascertain what this reflects about the underlying health of American democracy, especially our fidelity to the ethical norms that underpin our willingness to settle our political differences via civil discourse and fair electoral measures. I suggest, drawing on a variety of recent research in political science and kindred fields, that the erosion of support for democracy and the norms that sustain it can be traced back to ethnic and racial divisions but also to structural changes in the economy that have rendered large portions of the population precarious and increasingly desperate, and the failure of democratic institutions to respond to urgent needs of those experiencing downward mobility and instability.
