I'm Blind and this was my very first Paraclimbing competition all the way in Amsterdam - I undertook this for the residential experience section of my Queen's Guide Award.
The aim of a residential experience is to develop interpersonal and communication skills in a residential setting. This is an opportunity for you to stay away from home, to participate in a new experience, to make new friends and learn about each other, and to work together as a team.
I had to:
Participate in a residential experience run by Girlguiding or by another organisation lasting no fewer than three days (two nights) and at which the majority of participants were unknown to me
I flew out only knowing 3 of the team members from our fundraiser the night before and really developed my communication skills. Having never worked as a team in a sport like this and meeting my sighted Guide the day before the competition I pushed hard for this residential and it paid off massively. We worked really well as a team and I learned a lot of technique for my climbing like flagging and worked through a new way of sighted guiding that worked for me and my sighted guide. I developed my resilience and coped with challenging situations such as navigating new areas without support and bouncing back from a climb gone wrong.
I'm so happy I went and I will have amazing memories for life from this trip.
